0 – 4         Knowledge. The basic level of compliance. Equity PreK/K. You may recognize what equity is, but fail to understand the value of implementing, have not yet developed a sense of urgency, or perhaps are just getting started. Equity is part of the discussion, but no strategic plan is in place to define a goal, initiative, or desired outcomes beyond those required by state or federal regulation. The board of trustees has put measures in place to respond to regulatory guidance or funding compliance. 


5 – 8         Comprehension. Equity Elementary School. You can demonstrate understanding of equity. Your district is organizing around the principles of equity and examining policy and various models of initiatives. You have begun continuing professional development on equity and diversity. Equity is recognized as a benefit to student achievement and cultural awareness is acknowledged as a benefit to improved relations with community stakeholders. Equity and diversity initiatives are developed and implemented at the school level. 


9 – 12       Application. Equity Middle School. You are using your acquired knowledge from professional development. You are solving the challenges of inequity and diversity in new situations by applying that acquired knowledge, facts, and techniques. You can identify connections and relationships, particularly with regard to discipline and academics for diverse learners. Both the School Board and Superintendent recognize the academic and socio-emotional benefits of equity and can demonstrate that schools implementing the strategies have shown success in academic and behavioral domains.


13 – 16     Analysis. Equity High School. You examine and break information, data, about student achievement outcomes and discipline into component parts. You determine how the parts relate to one another. You identify motives or causes, make inferences, and find evidence to support generalizations. Equity is part of the superintendent’s strategic plan. Board policy exists in support of equity integration into academic and behavioral guidelines, procedures, and protocols. The Board and superintendent are committed to creating learning environments that support equity. Professional development of faculty and staff develops adult behaviors to eliminate implicit bias and promote equity.


17 – 20     Synthesis & Evaluation. The level of Cultural Connectedness. You have graduated. You have built a district structured to address diversity and equity regardless of the demographic shifts the district may experience. You can present and defend your diversity and equity strategic plan/s and defend those plans by making sound judgments about the information in them and the data your district produces. Your ideas are valid when viewed through the most critical D&E lenses. Equity is part of the culture of the district in every school and department. It is how things are done. It is part of the instructional, social, and disciplinary model. Equity drives the strategic initiatives of the district. The impact on academic performance and disciplinary data is evident.
